When to go, which rim to choose, what to pack, and everything else you need to plan a successful Grand Canyon visit.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (Mar–May)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Best overall. Mild temperatures, wildflowers, and manageable crowds early in the season. Late spring (April–May) can be very busy.

Fall (Sep–Nov)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Excellent. Cooling temperatures, thinning crowds, and beautiful light. Late October is particularly ideal.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

⭐⭐⭐

Busiest season. Very hot at the canyon floor (110°F+). Morning visits and high-rim hikes recommended. Monsoon season brings afternoon storms.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

⭐⭐⭐⭐

South Rim can see snow — stunning but verify road conditions. West Rim generally mild. Smaller crowds and lower prices.

Common Questions

Do I need a permit to visit the Grand Canyon?

For standard rim visits — no permit required. Overnight backcountry camping requires a Backcountry Permit from the NPS. Havasupai (the blue-green waterfalls) is separate and requires a permit booked months in advance.

Can I do the Grand Canyon as a day trip from Las Vegas?

Yes — the West Rim is a very manageable day trip at 2.5 hours each way. The South Rim is possible as a day trip (4.5 hrs each way) but long. We recommend an overnight for the South Rim.

What is the difference between Grand Canyon West and Grand Canyon National Park?

Grand Canyon West (West Rim) is operated by the Hualapai Nation and is a separate destination from Grand Canyon National Park's South Rim. West Rim is closer to Las Vegas and offers the Skywalk and helicopter canyon floor access. South Rim is the classic National Park with deeper views.

Is the Skywalk worth it?

Yes for most visitors — the glass floor perspective at 4,000 feet is genuinely unique and can't be replicated anywhere else. The premium cost is justified for the experience. Note that personal cameras aren't permitted on the bridge itself.
